As the COVID-19 outbreak spreads and most aspects of our daily life come to a halt,\u00a0organizations are compelled to enforce institutional changes<\/a>\u00a0to stay afloat based on the news and information circulating online. But, considering the proliferation of misinformation about COVID-19 \u2013 from outlandish remedies to speculation about government plans \u2013 decision-makers have a difficult time keeping track of accurate information for rational decisions resulting in an infodemic.<\/p>\n

In the wake of this global pandemic, the urgency for organizations to find and communicate timely, factual, and credible information has taken on new resonance and the same is true for businesses and organizations in Nepal as well. Hence, we conducted online research to be aware of measures anyone can take to ascertain a level of reliability in the online information we come across. We are sharing these findings for the benefit of all organizations and team members inside and outside Nepal:<\/p>\n

  1. Check the URL<\/strong>\u00a0Most organizations have their names in URL. To check the primary source, the URL should usually match with the source cited in the information.<\/li>\n
  2. Check\u00a0<\/strong>if\u00a0the title\u00a0<\/strong>matches the rest of the article.<\/li>\n
  3. Check the date\u00a0<\/strong>and double-check the information against other news coverage.<\/li>\n
  4. Check whether the information comes from the website of a familiar or\u00a0respected institution\u00a0<\/strong>that has a\u00a0proven track record of reliability<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  5. Cross-check the\u00a0organization\u2019s logo\u00a0<\/strong>used in the\u00a0article with the logo<\/a>\u00a0on the official website.<\/li>\n
  6. Check\u00a0 if the author is directly named in the byline and be wary of articles produced by\u00a0anonymous authors.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  7. Check the\u00a0author\u2019s credentials\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0affiliations.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  8. Check if the information\u00a0links back to credible sources\u00a0<\/strong>and provides proof of claims.<\/li>\n
  9. Look for\u00a0sites that specialize\u00a0<\/strong>in the\u00a0kind of information you are seeking<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  10. Be careful if the\u00a0article over encourages you to share.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
